For Thermostats

To participate in the SmartFlex Rewards Program with a thermostat, it’s required you’ve a heat pump and central air conditioning, as noted in the eligibility criteria.

When you apply for the SmartFlex Rewards Program (or install a thermostat that is pre-enrolled in the program), your thermostat will check that it is connected to eligible equipment. If your equipment is ineligible, you will receive an email informing you that your application cannot be approved.

What is central air conditioning?

Central air conditioning is a system that cools your home using a central unit that blows cold air from vents and ducts. Central air conditioning does not include an air conditioning unit that sits in your window, or a unit that is mounted on your wall or floor.

What is a heat pump?

A heat pump is a device that can be used to both heat and cool spaces, and is highly energy efficient. It works by transferring heat from one space to another rather than generating its own heat. Heat pumps can resemble central AC units. If you are unsure if your device is a heat pump, check your manufacturer's label/manual.

For EV chargers

For EV chargers

To participate in the SmartFlex Rewards Program with an EV charger, your home must have Advanced Metering Infrastructure (AMI) provided by PG&E. AMI is the standard metering technology that enables two-way communication between your meter and PG&E.

If you’re unsure whether your home has AMI, please contact customer support for assistance.

Installing a smart thermostat can seem daunting, but in most cases it’s straightforward — and there are plenty of resources to guide you.

For EV chargers, installation must be done by a licensed electrician to ensure safety and compliance.

How-to videos and step-by-step instructions for setting up each device brand are available below.

Creating a schedule

Creating a schedule

Programming your smart thermostat means creating a schedule that automatically heats or cools your home when you need it to. This not only saves time, but also can lower your energy bills. During SmartFlex Events, the SmartFlex Rewards Program keeps your home within three to four degrees of your programmed temperatures — so having a schedule that reflects your comfort needs helps ensure you stay comfortable during events.

Programming your EV charger through your EV app lets you set charging times that fit your routine. During SmartFlex Events, charging will pause temporarily and resume automatically when the event ends by following your schedule.

Setting a min/max temperature

Setting a min/max temperature

The adjustments the SmartFlex Rewards Program makes during SmartFlex Events are based on your thermostat’s schedule, so your home should never be more than a few degrees away from your normal temperatures. However, if you want to make certain that your home will not rise above or sink below a certain temperature, you can program maximum and minimum temperatures on your thermostat.

Nest

Nest

To set minimum and maximum temperatures on your Nest thermostat, you must lock your schedule. This allows you (and the SmartFlex Rewards Program) to make adjustments only within a certain range. When you lock your thermostat, you will create a 4-digit pin, which can be used to unlock it and make adjustments outside of the locked range.

Step-by-step instructions on how to lock and unlock your thermostat.

ecobee

You can set your ecobee’s maximum and minimum temperatures by creating heating/cooling ranges in the preferences. By creating this range, you can prevent others (including SmartFlex Rewards Program) from selecting temperatures outside of the range.
